Why treehuggers do not like Bakken
Posted by bakkenI have a few “acquaintances” that are treehuggers and they are passionate about the negative environmental impact of drilling in the Bakken & ANWAR regions. Their claims are vague and centered around destruction of the environment and complain non-treehuggers are not putting forth a long term solution to solving America’s dependence on foreign oil (ie they want us driving around in hybrid flower powered + solar buggies ). Furthermore, they argue that the 3-4 billion barrels of oil would only sustain America for 9 months so its useless and overhyped. To me, this argument is ridiculous. America doesn’t have to extract ALL the oil in Bakken to make a difference, just enough to sway the current import imbalance which is approximately the 45 million barrels of oil a month we rely on Saudi Arabia for. In fact, I gather if we were able to pull 20 million barrels per month from Bakken, it would drive the speculators out of the market and we could see sustained sub $100 oil for the forseeable future. But the treehuggers I talk to don’t want this….they want $300 a barrel oil and $15 a gallon gas…. this way it will make America spontaneously solve it’s oil problems by forcing everyone to bike or walk to work (privileged individuals could take SegWays). The remaining individuals would lose their jobs permanently and not have to worry about their carbon footprint. Treehuggers think this strategy will save the world. I keep asking them whether that is before or after the 20 year Great Depression #2 and global economic ruin that will result from this line of thinking.
The only positive from this mess is that now capitalism is hard at work looking at other fuel sources that can replace oil to some extent….but i guarantee that oil isn’t going away in our lifetimes (JMO)..

Food for thought:
Ask your tree hugger friends who are advocating green technologies if they understand the Elements needed to create this technology? A Prius uses over 65lbs of Rare Earth Elements. A 3 megawatt windmill requires 700lbs of neodymium. The Chinese mine over 93% of the world’s REE’s and they have banned export of them all. Our missile systems depend on REE’s, no REE’s, no Defense systems.
I find it ironic that tree-huggers advocate for green energy, while producing the necessary elements for them requires Open-pit and other environmentally damaging extraction techniques.
I suppose as long as the mining is done in the 3rd World, it’s okay.
(I keep getting flagged as Spammy.)
hopefully, we would be shifting more and more towards green energy in the future.,*,
Why is everyone only emphasizing the oil in the Bakken region? Hopefully the treehuggers will be happy about the natural gas part of the equation available in Bakken, because this could help transform the needs of some of our transportation and heating needs (even if it might only be 4-10%). If we utilized the natural gas available and the propane that comes with it for even only 4-10% by converting some of our vehicles to run on it, we could practically eliminate or at least put a serious dent in the 45 million barrels of oil we need from Saudi Arabia. Keep in mind as well that CNG and LPG is/can be HALF the cost of gasoline/diesel. And when Iran turns Saudi Arabia (and hence themselves) into a glass parking lot, we could already have our infrastructure in place so we don’t have to rely on their oil. Incidentally, we would also be helping our carbon footprint with the use of these alternative fuels.
we are always looking for alternative or green energy because we want to stop polluting the environment ‘,”
remember coal? colstrip montana was strip mined back in the 60-70′s drive by…….you can’t even tell…the company was very environmental frendly…so working together will keep everybody happy.
It’s to bad our elected officials can’t work together…
